Job Description:

The Rough Turner is responsible for operating lathe machines to perform rough machining operations on forged or cast steel components, such as rolls, shafts, and billets used in rolling mill operations. The role ensures components are machined to specified dimensions and tolerances prior to final machining or assembly.

📌 Key Responsibilities:

• Operate conventional/manual lathe machines for rough turning of heavy steel parts (e.g., rolls, billets, shafts).

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and machining symbols.

• Set up workpieces and tools according to job specifications.

• Perform basic machining operations such as facing, turning, tapering, threading, and boring.

• Measure components using precision instruments (micrometer, vernier caliper, gauges) to ensure dimensional accuracy.

• Prepare metal parts for final machining or grinding by removing excess material.

• Use overhead cranes or hoists to handle large or heavy components safely.

• Conduct routine machine maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication.

• Ensure adherence to safety standards and wear required PPE.

• Maintain cleanliness and organization in the machining work area.

• Report abnormalities or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor.

🧠 Required Skills & Qualifications:

• ITI (Turner / Machinist) or equivalent vocational training (preferred).

• 1–3 years of experience as a Rough Turner or Manual Lathe Operator, preferably in a steel plant or rolling mill.

• Strong understanding of machining processes and tools.

• Ability to work with large and heavy components.

• Familiarity with workshop safety protocols and practices.

• Physically fit and able to work in hot, noisy, and industrial environments.

• Willing to work in shifts (day/night) and under time constraints.

• Manual / Conventional Lathe Machine

• Measuring Instruments (Micrometers, Calipers, Gauges)

• Overhead Crane / Hoists

• Tool Post Grinder (if applicable)

• Cutting tools and inserts

✅ Preferred Experience:

• Machining of steel mill rolls, shafts, or billets

• Working in heavy engineering / rolling mill environments

• Knowledge of roughing tolerances for mill components
