Job Description:
A horticulture in-charge for a steel industry is responsible for managing the green spaces within and around the industrial complex. This includes landscape maintenance, developing nurseries, and creating aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sustainable green belts to help mitigate the plant's environmental impact. The role requires a blend of horticultural expertise, project management skills, and environmental awareness.
Core duties and responsibilities
Management and supervision
- Team leadership: Supervise and train a team of gardeners and horticulture staff. Delegate tasks and ensure work is completed efficiently and to high standards.
- Project management: Plan, implement, and oversee landscape and horticultural projects from conception to completion. Manage resources like labor, equipment, and materials effectively.
- Budgeting: Prepare and manage budgets for all horticulture projects, including procurement of materials, equipment, and personnel costs.
- Reporting: Track progress and prepare regular reports for management on horticultural activities, project status, and budget expenditures.
Horticultural operations
- Landscape design and maintenance: Develop and implement landscape and garden designs for the steel plant's main complex, residential areas, and surrounding green belts.
- Plant propagation and nursery management: Oversee the plant nursery, including the preparation of seedlings and propagation of seasonal flowers and other plants.
- Plant health and care: Monitor the health and growth of all plant species. Develop and implement strategies for pest control, disease management, and timely application of fertilizers.
- Soil and irrigation management: Conduct soil testing and implement improvement programs. Manage and maintain irrigation and watering systems.
Environmental and safety compliance
- Sustainable practices: Develop and implement sustainable horticultural practices and green belt development strategies to align with the steel company's environmental goals.
- Environmental mitigation: Use green spaces to help reduce dust, noise, and other environmental impacts from the steel production processes.
- Safety standards: Ensure all staff and contractors adhere to safety guidelines and protocols, especially regarding the use of equipment and chemicals.
Skills and qualifications
- Educational background: A degree or diploma in horticulture, agriculture, or botany from a recognized institute is often required.
- Experience: Proven experience in horticulture or landscape management, preferably within an industrial or large-scale institutional setting.
- Technical knowledge: Strong knowledge of plant varieties, soil science, plant biology, pest management, and landscaping techniques.
