Job Description:
A Fitter Utility's job description involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and plant utilities like heating, cooling, and compressed air systems. Key duties include interpreting technical drawings, fabricating and assembling parts, performing routine and major maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. 
 
Core responsibilities
  • Installation and assembly: Installing and assembling machinery, equipment, and utility systems according to technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Maintenance and repair: Performing both routine and major maintenance on equipment and utility systems to ensure they are in good working order. This includes troubleshooting and repairing faults and replacing broken parts.
  • Fabrication and fitting: Cutting and fitting various materials (often metal) to precise specifications, using tools like grinders, hand files, and welding equipment.
  • Inspection and monitoring: Regularly inspecting equipment, structures, and utility parameters to identify issues and ensure they meet safety and quality standards.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and solving problems with malfunctioning equipment and systems, including operational troubleshooting for systems like cooling water, steam, and compressed air. 
 
Essential skills and qualifications
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering documents.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, as well as relevant machinery and welding equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Attention to detail and good physical fitness.
  • Commitment to following all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with other technicians, operators, and foremen.
