A Manager of Automobile Service (HEMM) oversees the maintenance, repair, and operational efficiency of a fleet of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery, primarily in industries like mining or construction. This role requires a blend of management expertise, strong technical knowledge of heavy diesel equipment, and a commitment to safety and productivity.
Key Responsibilities

- Maintenance & Repair: Oversee breakdown maintenance, including major overhauls (e.g., engine overhauls), and ensure preventative maintenance (PM) schedules are strictly followed to minimize equipment downtime.
- Team Leadership: Hire, train, motivate, and manage a team of HEMM mechanics and support staff. Conduct performance reviews and identify training opportunities to address skill gaps.
- Inventory & Budget Management: Manage the department budget, control costs, monitor inventory levels of spare parts and tools, and coordinate parts orders with the parts department.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including safety guidelines (e.g., OSHA standards) and environmental laws.
- Problem-Solving & Quality Control: Diagnose complex problems, conduct quality checks of completed work, and implement strategies to improve efficiency and service delivery.
- Record Keeping: Maintain detailed service logs, records of maintenance performed on vehicles/equipment, and prepare reports for senior management on department performance and key metrics.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education: A bachelor's degree in automotive technology, mechanical engineering, business administration, or a related field is often preferred, though extensive relevant experience can substitute.
- Experience: Substantial experience in automotive service management, specifically in the maintenance of heavy commercial vehicles, construction equipment, or HEMM, is essential.
- Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of heavy diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air brake systems, electrical controls, and various repair techniques for HEMM.
- Core Competencies:
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication abilities.
- Proficiency with service management software and diagnostic tools.
- Financial acumen to manage budgets and control costs.
- Certifications: Relevant professional certifications, such as those from Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) for heavy trucks or specific industry credentials (e.g., Accredited Automotive Manager), are highly advantageous.
