Job Description:
Core Responsibilities
Key duties vary slightly by plant type (e.g., coal washery, sponge iron plant) but generally include:
- Operating Machinery: Controlling specialized equipment such as rotary kilns, crushers, conveyors, or electrical switchgear, often using computerized control systems (PLC/DCS) or local panels.
- Monitoring Plant Parameters: Continuously watching gauges, meters, and control systems to monitor flow rates, temperature, pressure, and voltage, ensuring all parameters are within safe and efficient limits.
- Inspections and Maintenance: Performing routine checks, cleaning, and lubrication of equipment (pumps, compressors, etc.) to prevent failures. Performing minor repairs and reporting major issues to maintenance teams.
- Troubleshooting: Identifying and responding promptly to alarms, equipment malfunctions, or abnormal conditions to take corrective actions and minimize downtime.
- Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintaining detailed logs of operational data, maintenance activities, and incidents for analysis, compliance, and management review.
- Safety and Compliance: Strictly following safety protocols, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), participating in safety drills, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
- Coordination and Communication: Collaborating with other operators, shift supervisors, and maintenance personnel to ensure seamless operations and address interdepartmental needs.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required, with technical training, an associate degree in a relevant field, or an apprenticeship often preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of industrial machinery, electrical systems, and process control systems (SCADA, PLC).
- Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to focus for long periods.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
