A Taper (or Drywall Finisher) job involves applying tape and joint compound (mud) to drywall seams, screws, and holes, then sanding to create a smooth, seamless surface ready for paint or wallpaper. Key duties include spreading compound, embedding tape, applying multiple coats, sanding, and repairing damaged drywall, requiring physical stamina, precision, and knowledge of construction materials for residential and commercial projects.
- Seam Finishing: Apply joint compound over taped seams and imperfections (nail/screw heads, cracks).
- Sanding: Smooth surfaces to achieve a seamless finish for final coating.
- Repairs: Fix damaged drywall, holes, and replace ceiling tiles as needed.
- Material Application: Use trowels, knives, and spatulas to spread mud; press paper or fiberglass tape into compound.
- Surface Preparation: Prepare walls and ceilings for painting or wallpapering.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, bend, climb, and lift for long periods.
- Attention to Detail: Crucial for high-quality, seamless finishes.
- Tool Proficiency: Skilled with hand tools (knives, sanders, utility knives) and potentially power tools/lifts.
- Knowledge: Understanding of building materials, methods, and safety (masks, goggles).
- Work Ethic: Punctual, organized, and able to work in a team.
- Works on new construction, remodels, residential, and commercial sites.
- Often involves working at heights (ladders, scaffolds) and in various conditions.
- Often learned through on-the-job training (OJT), which can last up to a year.
