Job Description:
A Safety Officer develops, implements, and enforces workplace safety policies, ensuring compliance with OHS regulations by conducting risk assessments, inspections, and training, investigating incidents, and promoting a culture of safety to prevent accidents and maintain a healthy environment for all employees. Their role involves proactive hazard identification, policy development, employee engagement, and meticulous record-keeping across diverse industries like construction, manufacturing, healthcare, and even offices.
Key Responsibilities
- Policy & Compliance: Create, update, and enforce safety policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to local, national, and international OHS standards (e.g., OSHA).
- Risk Management: Conduct regular risk assessments, identify hazards, and implement preventive measures and controls
.
- Inspections & Audits: Perform routine site inspections and audits to detect unsafe conditions, equipment, or practices.
- Training & Awareness: Develop and deliver safety training, drills, and awareness programs (e.g., toolbox talks, emergency response).
- Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, near misses, and complaints, preparing reports and recommending corrective actions.
- Reporting: Maintain detailed records of safety activities, inspections, training, and incidents.
- Liaison: Communicate with management, employees, and regulatory bodies to foster a strong safety culture.
Core Duties
- Identify Hazards: Proactively walk the site to spot potential dangers before incidents occur.
- Review High-Risk Work: Oversee fall protection, confined spaces, energized work, etc..
- Ensure Documentation: Verify that permits, inspections, and safety talks are completed.
- Track Competencies: Monitor employee training and certifications.
