Job Description:

A General Manager (GM) of Central Purchase in a steel company is a senior leadership role responsible for the end-to-end strategic sourcing, procurement, and supply chain management of raw materials, capital items, and consumables. This role requires 15–25+ years of experience, preferably within an integrated steel plant, induction furnace, or rolling mill, and focuses on cost optimization, vendor development, and ensuring uninterrupted production.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Strategic Sourcing & Procurement: Develops, implements, and manages procurement strategies for raw materials (iron ore, coal, scrap, ferroalloys), machinery, and spares.
- Cost & Vendor Management: Drives cost-reduction initiatives by tracking market trends (e.g., LME, commodity prices). Identifies, evaluates, and manages key suppliers, including negotiating long-term agreements (AMCs/MoUs) and conducting vendor ratings.
- Inventory & Logistics: Optimizes inventory levels and working capital using ERP tools (SAP MM) to avoid shortages or excess stock. Manages inward logistics, transportation, and rake movements.
- Leadership & Collaboration: Leads the procurement team and works with Production, Quality, and Finance departments to ensure material quality and production timelines.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Experience & Education: 15–25+ years in procurement, with 5+ years in a senior steel or heavy engineering role. An Engineering (Mechanical/Metallurgy) or MBA degree is preferred.
- Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of raw materials/consumables, logistics, and ERP systems (SAP MM).
- Competencies: Strong negotiation skills, analytical capabilities, and strategic leadership.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Savings: Percentage of cost reduction against budget/market rates.
- Vendor Performance: Percentage of on-time delivery and quality acceptance rates.
- Operational Efficiency: Improving inventory turn ratios and ensuring zero production downtime due to material shortages.
