Job Description:
A Head of Instrumentation (HOD Instrumentation) in a power plant manages the entire process control and measurement systems (DCS, PLCs, field instruments like transmitters, analyzers) for safe, efficient, and reliable power generation, focusing on planning maintenance, leading a technical team, ensuring compliance, troubleshooting complex issues, budgeting, and driving reliability and automation upgrades for equipment like boilers, turbines, and water treatment. They bridge technical execution with strategic goals, ensuring plant performance meets standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Development: Manage and mentor instrumentation & controls (I&C) engineers and technicians, setting performance goals, conducting training, and fostering skill development.
- Maintenance & Operations: Oversee calibration, maintenance, and repair of all process instruments (pressure, temp, flow, level, analyzers) and control systems (DCS, PLC, fieldbus).
- Planning & Budgeting: Develop annual maintenance plans, manage budgets for spares, external services, and new projects, ensuring alignment with plant goals.
- Compliance & Safety: Enforce strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards, permit-to-work systems, and regulatory requirements.
- Troubleshooting & Reliability: Lead root cause analysis for failures, implement predictive/preventive maintenance, and drive continuous improvement for equipment reliability.
- Project Management: Oversee instrumentation aspects of new projects, upgrades, and major overhauls (FAT, SAT, commissioning).
- Cross-functional Coordination: Collaborate with Electrical, Mechanical, and Operations teams to ensure seamless integration and performance.
Core Areas of Focus
- Process Control: DCS/PLC logic, loop tuning, and system configuration for boilers, turbines, fuel systems, and environmental controls.
- Field Instrumentation: Pressure, temperature, flow, level transmitters, control valves, analyzers (pH, O2, HCs).
- Automation: Management of plant-wide automation systems for optimal production and efficiency.
- Water/Fuel Analysis: Monitoring and control of water chemistry and fuel quality parameters.
Essential Skills
- Deep knowledge of power plant processes, DCS/PLC systems, and instrumentation.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with CMMS (e.g., Maximo), safety regulations, and engineering standards.
