Job Description:
The job of a Foundry Plant Maintenance Helper is an entry-level support role that involves assisting skilled technicians with the installation, maintenance, and repair of machinery and equipment in a foundry environment. This role serves as a foundational step for individuals aspiring to become full-fledged maintenance technicians or engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with Maintenance and Repairs: Work under the guidance of experienced mechanics or technicians to perform routine, preventive, and breakdown maintenance on foundry equipment such as furnaces, molding machines, sand plants, conveyors, and material handling systems.
- Equipment Operation and Handling: Assist in the assembly and disassembly of equipment components and handle raw materials and finished products. May operate a forklift truck if certified.
- Tool and Material Management: Prepare tools, parts, and materials for maintenance tasks, ensuring the maintenance team is properly equipped for efficient operations. Manage supplies and maintain an inventory of spare parts as directed.
- Workplace Safety and Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhere strictly to all safety protocols (e.g., Lockout-Tagout, using proper Personal Protective Equipment or PPE), and participate in safety inspections and risk assessments.
- Documentation and Reporting: Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment performance, often using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). Report any issues or concerns to supervisors promptly.
- General Support: Perform general labor duties and other support tasks as assigned, which can include minor plumbing or carpentry work in the facility.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically the minimum educational requirement. Vocational or technical training is a plus.
- Technical Skills: Basic knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment is essential. A willingness to learn about mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, a proactive attitude, and excellent problem-solving abilities. The ability to follow instructions closely and work effectively in a team environment is crucial.
- Physical Demands and Work Environment: The role often involves working in a physically demanding environment with heat, noise, and potential exposure to dust and chemicals. The ability to lift heavy loads (up to 50 pounds or more) and work in confined spaces or at heights may be required.
