Job Description:
The role of a Helper, Pit Side (Foundry Plant) involves supporting skilled foundry workers in the pit area (where larger molds may be prepared) or pour deck, primarily through material handling, cleaning, and basic maintenance to ensure smooth and safe casting operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Material Handling:
- Loading, unloading, and transporting raw materials, tools, and supplies to and from the pit/pour area.
- Moving finished or semi-finished castings to designated areas for grinding or cleaning.
- Mold and Casting Support:
- Assisting with the preparation of molds, including placing weights or metal frames to maintain integrity during the pour.
- Helping with the "shakeout" process: breaking up sand molds and removing the finished castings once the metal has solidified.
- Brushing or cleaning compressed carbon/sand from molds/castings.
- Housekeeping and Safety:
- Maintaining a clean and organized work area, which includes sweeping, removing debris, and disposing of production waste.
- Following all safety guidelines, wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, and respirators.
- Monitoring equipment and reporting any issues or safety hazards to a supervisor.
- General Assistance:
- Performing basic maintenance tasks on tools and equipment as instructed.
- Following verbal and written instructions accurately to support the overall production process.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing for long periods, bending, and lifting heavy objects (often up to 50 lbs or more).
- Work Environment Tolerance: Willingness to work in a hot, noisy, and potentially dusty industrial environment.
- Safety Consciousness: Strong commitment to following safety protocols and procedures.
- Teamwork and Communication: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with skilled workers and supervisors.
- Attention to Detail: Essential for quality control and ensuring correct procedures are followed.
- Experience (Advantageous): Prior experience in a manufacturing or foundry setting is often beneficial but generally not required, as on-the-job training is common for helper roles.
