Job Description:
The Head of Corporate Affairs for a steel manufacturing company is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and protecting the company's reputation, managing relationships with key stakeholders (government, media, community, etc.), and ensuring regulatory compliance to support business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Government and Regulatory Affairs:
- Serve as the primary liaison between the company and government authorities, regulatory agencies, and industry associations.
- Monitor, interpret, and communicate relevant legislative and policy developments (e.g., related to the Mines & Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act, environmental audits, etc.).
- Advocate for company interests in policy matters and support lobbying initiatives, including securing mining renewals and industrial incentives.
- Ensure full compliance with applicable corporate, environmental, factory, and forest clearance regulations.
- Manage the process for obtaining necessary permits and clearances (e.g., land acquisition, pollution control certificates) for plant operations and new projects.
- Corporate Communications & Public Relations:
- Develop and execute internal and external communication strategies to promote the company's image and brand.
- Manage media relations, including handling press releases, briefings, and serving as a company spokesperson.
- Develop and implement crisis management strategies to alleviate crisis situations and maintain a positive reputation.
- Stakeholder & Community Engagement:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including policymakers, local communities, NGOs, and trade bodies like the CII and FICCI.
- Oversee Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including budgeting, project delivery (e.g., health clinics, skill development programs), and impact reporting in line with regulations like the Companies Act, 2013.
- Implement grievance redressal mechanisms for community issues.
- Strategic Planning & Advisory:
- Advise senior management and the Board on key strategic communications, reputational issues, and the potential impact of regulatory changes.
- Develop and manage the departmental budget and measure external perception of the organization.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: A postgraduate degree (MBA, LLM, or Public Policy) from a top-tier institution is often preferred.
- Experience:
- Typically 15-20+ years of relevant experience in corporate affairs, government relations, or public policy.
- Significant experience at a senior management or C-suite level within heavy industries (e.g., steel, mining, energy).
- Hands-on experience with regional regulations and industrial clearances may be required depending on the company's location (e.g., Chhattisgarh mining regulations).
- Skills:
- Exceptional written and verbal communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven ability to work under pressure, manage high-stakes situations, and lead a team effectively.
