Job Description:
A General Manager (GM) for a Power Plant Project within a steel manufacturing company is a senior leadership role focused on leading the planning, execution, and commissioning of captive power projects (typically WHRB or CFBC boilers) to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the steel melting shop (SMS), furnaces, and rolling mills. 
 
 
 
Job Purpose:
Oversee the end-to-end execution of greenfield/brownfield power plant capital projects, ensuring completion within schedule, budget, and quality standards while optimizing energy costs for the steel plant. 
 
 
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Project Planning & Execution: Lead end-to-end execution of power plant projects, including Waste Heat Recovery Boilers (WHRB) and Coal Fired Boiler Circuits (CFBC).
  • Capex Management & Budgeting: Prepare and manage annual capital expenditure (CAPEX) budgets, ensuring cost optimization, value engineering, and compliance with budget controls.
  • Engineering & Technical Coordination: Coordinate with consultants, OEMs, and technical teams for plant design, GA drawings, manufacturing, and layout finalization.
  • Contract & Vendor Management: Lead techno-commercial evaluations, vendor selection, contract negotiation, and monitor vendor performance.
  • Site Management & Commissioning: Supervise fabrication, erection, and commissioning of turbines, boilers, generators, and auxiliary systems.
  • Statutory Compliance & Safety: Ensure adherence to environmental norms (CPCB, emission standards) and safety protocols (HSE).
  • Operations Transition: Collaborate with operations teams to hand over commissioned facilities and stabilize operations. 
     
 
 
Required Qualifications & Experience:
  • Education: BE/B.Tech in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience: 15–25 years in thermal/captive power plant project management, preferably in the steel or heavy manufacturing industry.
  • Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of CFBC boilers, turbines, WHRB, high-tension electrical systems, and project management tools like MS Project or Primavera.
  • Leadership: Strong team management, analytical troubleshooting, and vendor management skills.

  • Project completion within schedule and budget.
  • Quality standards met without major rework.
  • Plant uptime and efficiency post-commissioning
