Job Description:
A General Manager (GM) of Mechanical Maintenance in a Ferro Alloy/Steel Manufacturing Company is a senior leadership position responsible for the total reliability, maintenance, and technical efficiency of high-temperature furnace plants and auxiliary equipment. The primary goal is to ensure maximum equipment uptime, optimize production, and maintain strict safety standards for equipment such as Submerged Arc Furnaces (SAF) and raw material handling systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance Strategy & Reliability
- Develop and execute comprehensive preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance schedules for Submerged Arc Furnaces, tapping mechanisms, electrode handling systems, and pollution control equipment.
- Lead the troubleshooting team to diagnose root causes of mechanical failures and implement swift repairs to minimize downtime.
- Drive equipment reliability initiatives to achieve 98%+ equipment uptime.
2. Operational Excellence
- Monitor furnace behavior and mechanical efficiency of auxiliary equipment (crushing, screening plants, hydraulic systems).
- Oversee shutdown planning and execution to ensure minimal production disruption.
- Implement Kaizen and Kaizen and RCA (Root Cause Analysis) to reduce maintenance costs.
3. Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Enforce strict compliance with OSHA, state environmental standards, and company safety policies.
- Implement LOTO (Lockout-Tagout) and Permit-to-Work systems in confined spaces and hot work areas.
- Foster a zero-accident culture through training and safety audits.
4. Team Leadership & Administration
- Lead, mentor, and train a team of mechanical engineers and maintenance technicians.
- Supervise contract management during maintenance shutdowns.
- Manage manpower planning, performance development, and shift schedules.
5. Budget & Inventory Control
- Prepare and manage annual maintenance budgets (OPEX/CAPEX).
- Oversee inventory management for critical spares, ensuring timely availability for shutdowns and breakdowns.
Key Focus Areas & Equipment
- Submerged Arc Furnaces (SAF): Electrode holding, slipping, and hoist systems.
- Hydraulics: Tapping mechanisms, furnace tilting systems.
- Raw Material Handling: Conveyor belts, bunkers, crusher, screen, and briquette presses.
- Utilities: Cooling water pumps, DE Systems (Dust Extraction), gearboxes, and cranes.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BE/B.Tech).
- Experience: 15-20+ years of hands-on maintenance experience in metallurgical, steel (SMS), or ferroalloy plants.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in hydraulic systems, material handling, furnace mechanicals, and SAP PM/CMMS.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership, decision-making, analytical thinking, and effective communication.
