Job Description:
A Fitter Fabricator reads blueprints to cut, shape, and assemble metal structural components using tools like shears, grinders, and welding equipment. They are responsible for accurately fitting, aligning, and welding metal parts for industries like construction and manufacturing. Key tasks include ensuring quality standards, maintaining equipment, and strictly adhering to safety procedures.
Core Responsibilities and Duties
- Blueprint Interpretation: Analyzing engineering drawings and technical specifications to plan the sequence of tasks.
- Layout and Fabrication: Marking, cutting, bending, and forming metal components using tools such as oxy-acetylene torches, shears, and press brakes.
- Assembly and Fitting: Aligning and securing parts using tack welding, bolting, or riveting to prepare for final welding.
- Welding and Joining: Utilizing various welding processes (MIG, TIG, Arc) to join components.
- Quality Control: Inspecting finished products to ensure they meet specifications and tolerances.
- Safety Compliance: Maintaining a clean and safe workspace, wearing PPE, and following safety regulations.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of metal fabrication, welding techniques, and blueprint reading.
- Tools and Equipment: Experience with heavy-duty machinery (grinders, drills, punches, saws).
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials, work in confined spaces, or operate at heights.
- Experience: Generally 5+ years in a similar role for senior positions, though apprenticeships are common.
- Education: High school diploma or trade school certification in welding/metal fabrication.
