Job Description:
A Grinder operates machinery or handheld tools to cut, shape, and finish metal or other materials to precise, specified tolerances. They are responsible for setting up machines, inspecting workpieces for quality, and adhering to strict safety protocols. Common tasks include reading blueprints, adjusting equipment, and smoothing surfaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Operation: Set up, operate, and maintain grinding machines (e.g., surface, cylindrical, Blanchard).
- Material Shaping: Remove excess material to meet precise engineering specifications and blueprint tolerances.
- Quality Control:
Inspect finished parts for flaws or cracks using measuring instruments like micrometers and calipers.
- Safety Compliance: Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to safety protocols while operating heavy machinery.
- Tooling Maintenance: Select appropriate grinding wheels and replace worn abrasive tools.
Requirements & Skills
- Experience: Previous experience as a grinder or in a manufacturing environment is typically required (often 1–5 years).
- Technical Knowledge: Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Tools & Equipment: Proficiency with pneumatic, electric, and hand-held grinders.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) and stand for long periods.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is generally required.
