Job Description:

 

A Spectrometer Operator in a steel manufacturing company is responsible for analyzing the chemical composition of raw materials, molten metal (heats), and finished products using Optical Emission Spectrometers (OES). This critical quality control role ensures that steel meets specific industry and customer standards regarding its elemental makeup (e.g., iron, carbon, sulfur, nitrogen). 
 
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Sample Preparation: Cut, grind, and polish steel samples (billets, rods, or melt samples) to prepare them for analysis.
  • Operation: Operate stationary or mobile Optical Emission Spectrometers to determine the chemical composition of metal samples.
  • Quality Control: Analyze molten metal samples during the melt process to ensure compliance with quality standards before casting.
  • Calibration & Maintenance: Perform daily calibration checks, standardization, and routine maintenance of the spectrometer to ensure accuracy.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Interpret spectral data to identify material grades, record results in software (LIMS), and report findings to the production team.
  • Process Adjustments: Provide immediate feedback to melt shop personnel regarding necessary additions or dilutions needed in the furnace.
  • Documentation: Maintain records of heat analysis for Mill Test Certificates (MTC) and ensure compliance with ISO 9001 standards. 
     
 
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Typically a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Metallurgy.
  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience operating spectroscopy equipment (specifically OES) in a foundry or steel plant.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with metal analysis software, knowledge of metallurgical testing methods (hardness, microstructure), and familiarity with steel alloys.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work in a hot, noisy, and fast-paced industrial environment. 
     
Essential Skills
  • High attention to detail for precise measurements.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities for equipment malfunction.
  • Ability to work in shifts (including nights and weekends).
  • Safety-conscious mindset regarding high-temperature equipment and hazardous materials. 
 
Common Working Conditions
  • Industry: Steel plant, foundry, or metallurgical laboratory.
  • Work Environment: Frequently located within or near the Melting Shop (SMS).
