Job Description:
A CNC Operator in a tower manufacturing company (e.g., telecom towers, structural steel towers, wind towers) is responsible for setting up and operating Computer Numerical Control machinery to cut, drill, and shape heavy structural steel components. They interpret blueprints and engineering specifications to fabricate large metal parts while adhering to strict safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Operation: Set up and operate CNC machinery—such as beam lines, plasma cutters, plate processors, and drills—to produce high-precision tower components.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read, analyze, and interpret technical drawings, 3D models, and engineering documents to determine the correct dimensions and material requirements.
- Setup and Programming: Load programs, select tools, and calibrate machine offsets (speeds and feeds) to ensure accurate fabrication.
- Material Handling: Use cranes, forklifts, or other equipment to load raw steel plates and beams into the machine.
- Quality Control: Inspect finished parts using precision tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measures) to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance (cleaning, lubricating, changing tools) and troubleshoot minor operational malfunctions.
- Documentation: Maintain production logs, batch records, and inventory reports.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: Generally 1–3+ years of experience as a CNC operator in a structural steel, fabrication, or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading engineering drawings (blueprints) and understanding geometric dimensions and tolerances.
- Programming Knowledge: Familiarity with CNC machine controllers (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, Haas) and basic G-code/M-code knowledge.
- Tool Handling: Ability to use precision measuring instruments.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; a diploma or certification in engineering/machining is a plus.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Physical Stamina: Standing for long periods, bending, and lifting/moving heavy objects (up to 50–75 lbs).
- Environment: Working in a high-noise, industrial factory setting, requiring strict adherence to PPE (personal protective equipment) protocols.
Typical "Tower Manufacturing" Specific Tasks
- Nesting: Performing nesting tasks to maximize material usage and reduce scrap.
- Component Marking: Labeling cut parts to ensure easy identification during assembly.
- Structural Steel Focus: Working with various grades of steel plates and beams used for towers.
