Job Description:
A Mechanical Engineer in a Power Plant for a Steel Fabricator Company is responsible for the continuous operation, maintenance, and reliability of captive power generation equipment (often Coal Fired Boiler Circuits/CFBC or Waste Heat Recovery Boilers/WHRB) that supports steel production, such as melting furnaces, rolling mills, and fabrication units.
Job Purpose
To maximize production uptime by ensuring uninterrupted, cost-effective power supply through efficient operations, preventive maintenance, and strict safety compliance of power plant machinery.
Key Responsibilities
- Operation & Control:
- Direct and monitor shift operations, specifically utilizing DCS (Distributed Control Systems), PLC, and SCADA to manage boiler, turbine, and Balance of Plant (BOP) parameters.
- Oversee startups, shutdowns, and emergency troubleshooting of turbines and boilers.
- Maintenance & Reliability:
- Execute preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance on heavy rotating equipment (pumps, fans, motors) and pressure parts to minimize power interruptions.
- Conduct root cause analysis for machinery malfunctions and implement corrective actions.
- Engineering & Technical Support:
- Design/implement modifications to plant equipment to enhance safety and reliability.
- Review technical documentation, including PID diagrams, blueprints, and vendor drawings.
- Ensure proper lubrication and structural integrity of boilers and auxiliary equipment.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Enforce Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems, statutory regulations, and high-tension (HT/LT) safety protocols.
- Ensure adherence to environmental norms (CPCB, emission standards) for ash handling and waste discharge.
- Project Management & Coordination:
- Oversee erection, testing, and commissioning of new equipment.
- Collaborate with electrical and civil teams to support structural maintenance and power evacuation.
- Cost Control & Inventory:
- Manage spares inventory and procure essential mechanical components.

Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: B.E./B.Tech or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: 3–10 years of experience in thermal power plant operations and maintenance, ideally in a captive power plant (CPP) within a steel, cement, or heavy manufacturing industry.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of CFBC/WHRB Boilers, Steam Turbines, Ash Handling Systems, and Water Treatment Plants.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with SAP (PM/MM modules) and CAD software.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership, analytical troubleshooting, and ability to manage teams in high-pressure situations.
