Job Description:
A Head of Department (HOD) in an educational institution is a pivotal middle leadership role that combines academic, strategic, and administrative responsibilities. The HOD is responsible for the overall functioning, staff management, and student outcomes of a specific academic department (e.g., Mathematics, Science, English).
Key Responsibilities
- Academic Leadership & Curriculum Management:
- Develop, implement, and review the curriculum (schemes of work, lesson plans) in line with national or international standards.
- Monitor teaching quality through lesson observations and provide constructive feedback.
- Oversee student assessment, analysis of results, and reporting to parents.
- Ensure consistency in teaching and learning strategies across all classrooms.
- Staff Management & Development:
- Line manage, motivate, and mentor staff members.
- Induct and train new staff members.
- Conduct staff appraisals, performance management, and identify CPD (Continuing Professional Development) needs.
- Operational & Administrative Control:
- Manage the departmental budget efficiently, including procuring equipment, textbooks, and software.
- Organize departmental meetings and maintain minutes.
- Ensure a safe working environment and maintain departmental resources.
- Appoint class committees, class advisors, and faculty advisors.
- Student Progress & Welfare:
- Use student data to identify underachievers and implement intervention strategies.
- Ensure student welfare and academic discipline within the department.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Education: A master's degree in the subject specialization, plus a teaching qualification (e.g., B.Ed., QTS, or PGCE).
- Experience: Typically 8-10 years of teaching experience, with 3-5 years in a leadership role.
- Expertise: Deep subject knowledge and understanding of curriculum design and assessment.

- Leadership & Management: Ability to inspire, motivate, and manage a team.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with staff, parents, and senior leadership.
- Organization: Strong capability in balancing teaching, administration, and strategic planning.

- Adaptability: Ability to respond to educational changes and pedagogical innovations
