Job Description:
A Safety Manager in a steel company is responsible for designing, implementing, and enforcing comprehensive health and safety programs in a high-risk industrial environment. This role focuses on minimizing risks related to heavy machinery, extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, and large-scale industrial operations to ensure compliance with legal regulations.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Hazard Identification and Mitigation: Regularly inspects the plant, including melt shops, rolling mills, and maintenance areas, to identify hazards. Develops procedures to eliminate risks, such as lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols and machine guarding.
- Compliance and Reporting: Ensures full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA) and maintains accurate documentation in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Accident/Incident Investigation: Leads investigations into accidents, near-misses, and occupational illnesses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Training and Development: Conducts safety training for new hires and ongoing sessions for all employees on topics such as PPE usage, handling hazardous materials, and emergency responses.
- Safety Culture Promotion: Motivates workers to adhere to safety protocols, organizes safety meetings/toolbox talks, and works to combat complacency in routine tasks.
- Contractor Safety Management: Supervises the safety performance of contractors on-site to ensure they comply with the company’s safety standards.
- Emergency Response: Develops and tests emergency action plans, including fire drills and evacuation procedures.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- Experience: Generally 15+ years of experience in heavy industrial or manufacturing safety, with preference given to experience within the steel industry.
- Certifications: Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or NEBOSH are highly preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of OSHA regulations, risk assessment methods, and hazard control methodologies.
- Leadership Skills: Ability to communicate safety rules to a diverse workforce and influence management on safety improvements.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Environmental Factors: Frequent exposure to loud noises, extreme heat, cold, dust, and fumes.
- Physical Activity: Ability to walk and stand for long periods, climb ladders, and traverse rough terrain in the plant.
- PPE Requirement: Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including hard hats, safety-toe boots, and hearing protection.
