Job Description:
The Tool Room Shift Incharge is responsible for the overall maintenance, manufacturing, and modification of progressive, transfer, and stage press tools to ensure zero downtime in the press shop. This role leads a team of tool makers and technicians to meet production targets, ensuring high-quality sheet metal stampings while adhering to strict safety and 5S standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Shift Management & Operations: Supervise daily tool room operations, including manpower allocation to ensure tool readiness for production shifts.
- Tool Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Oversee preventative and breakdown maintenance of progressive tools, transfer dies, and stage tools. Troubleshoot tool failures during pressing to reduce downtime.
- Tool Development & Modifications: Participate in tool trials, validate dimensions, and lead modifications of press tools to meet quality standards.
- Die Making & Tool Polishing: Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects, performing precision repairs.
- Team Leadership & Training: Coach, mentor, and train junior tool makers and technicians on tool-room machinery (EDM, VMC, Milling) and precision techniques.
- Inventory & Cost Control: Manage tool room consumables, spares, and die components inventory to maintain optimal stock levels.
- Continuous Improvement: Implement Kaizen, 5S, and Lean manufacturing practices to improve tool life and reduce scrap.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce company safety policies, ensuring a safe and clean work environment (HSE compliance).
Required Technical Skills & Competencies
- Expertise in Press Tools: Deep knowledge of progressive, compound, and deep drawing dies.
- Machining Proficiency: Hands-on experience with conventional and CNC/EDM tool room machinery.
- Drawing Interpretation: Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and 3D models (AutoCAD).
- Quality Tools: Proficient in using measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges) and familiar with TS16949/IATF 16949 standards.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical skills for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to eliminate chronic tool issues.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Diploma or BE/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Tool & Die Making.
- Experience: 10–18 years of relevant experience in a press shop/tool room environment, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
- Industry Preference: Automotive sheet metal stamping.
