Job Description:
A Quality Control (QC) / Lab Technician for building works and construction is responsible for inspecting, testing, and analyzing construction materials—such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and steel—to ensure they meet project specifications, building codes, and safety standards. They operate both in site laboratories and directly on construction sites, acting as a "gatekeeper of quality" by preventing defective materials from being used.

Key Responsibilities & Duties
  • Material Testing: Conduct laboratory and field testing on construction materials including concrete (slump, air content, temperature, cylinder casting), soil (compaction, density), aggregates, bitumen, and masonry blocks.
  • Sample Collection: Visit sites to collect, label, and safely transport samples for testing, ensuring compliance with standards such as ASTM or IS codes.
  • Equipment Maintenance & Calibration: Operate, clean, and calibrate laboratory equipment (e.g., Compression Testing Machines, sieves, balances, nuclear density gauges).
  • Documentation & Reporting: Meticulously record testing data, maintain logs, write reports, and document deviations or out-of-specification results for management.
  • Quality Compliance: Ensure all materials align with technical specifications and project blueprints.
  • Site Collaboration: Work with project managers and site engineers to report findings and make recommendations based on testing results.
  • Safety Adherence: Strictly follow Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Education: A Diploma or ITI in Civil Engineering, Chemistry, or a relevant technical field is generally required.
  • Knowledge of Standards: Familiarity with standard testing procedures (e.g., ACI for concrete, DOT for asphalt, or IS codes).
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in performing tests and documenting results.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to operate lab equipment and utilize computer software (MS Excel, LIMS) for data logging.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, walk construction sites, and lift materials (often over 15-25 kg).
  • Certifications: ACI Concrete Field Testing Certification or equivalent is often preferred or required.

Typical Working Conditions
  • Work is divided between a lab setting and active construction sites, which can involve exposure to dust, noise, and varied weather conditions.
  • Often involves a 6-8 hour workday, totaling approximately 40 hours per week, with potential for overtime to meet project deadlines.
