Job Description:
An Arc Welder in the boiler industry specializes in joining, repairing, and maintaining high-pressure metal components such as boilers, storage tanks, and pressure vessels. These professionals work in manufacturing plants, power plants, and shipyards, typically utilizing Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick), TIG (GTAW), and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) to create durable, leak-proof, and high-quality joints that meet stringent safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Welding and Fabrication: Perform arc welding in all positions—flat, vertical, and overhead—on heavy-duty metal plates and pipes.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret complex technical drawings, schematics, and welding symbols to determine specifications and layout.
- Material Preparation: Prepare, cut, grind, and bevel metal components using hand tools, plasma cutters, or oxy-acetylene torches before welding.
- Inspection and Quality Control: Inspect welds for defects, ensuring compliance with pressure vessel codes and standards.
- Equipment Maintenance: Set up, operate, and maintain welding machines and electrical equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to strict safety protocols, including working in confined spaces and at heights, and using personal protective equipment (PPE).
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Generally 2-5 years of experience in high-pressure welding or industrial fabrication.
- Certifications: Valid welding certification (e.g., AWS - American Welding Society, NCCER is often required or preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of welding electrodes, filler metals, and metallurgy.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials (up to 20-25 Kg) and work in demanding environments.
- Manual Dexterity: Strong hand-eye coordination for precision work.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Typically factory or workshop settings, but may include on-site work at power plants, refineries, or construction sites.
- Physical Demands: Long hours, standing, heavy lifting, and potential work in confined, hot, or noisy areas.
