Job Description:
A VTL (Vertical Turning Lathe) Machine Operator in a foundry plant specializes in setting up and operating vertical lathes to machine large, heavy, or complex cast metal components (such as valve bodies, pump housings, or gears). This role ensures cast parts are machined precisely according to engineering specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Setup: Set up, align, and secure heavy castings on the VTL table, utilizing fixtures and clamps.
- Operations: Operate CNC or conventional VTL machines to perform turning, boring, facing, and threading operations.
- Tooling: Select, install, and adjust cutting tools and inserts.
- Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and job specifications.
- Quality Control: Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers, and bore gauges.
- Maintenance: Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor troubleshooting on the VTL machine.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to shop floor safety regulations, including 5S practices, and ensure the safety of surrounding workers during heavy lifting.
Required Qualifications
- Education: ITI or Diploma in Machinist, Fitter, Tool & Die, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: 1–5 years of relevant experience in a machine shop or heavy engineering/foundry environment.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with CNC controllers (e.g., Siemens, Fanuc).
- Strong knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, and machining processes.
- Ability to read drawings and use inspection tools.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods and handle heavy parts.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of G-codes and M-codes for CNC VTL machines.
- Experience in machining steel valve castings.
- Ability to work in rotating shifts.
Working Conditions
- Foundry shop floor (industrial environment).
- Potential exposure to dust, noise, and heat.
- Requirement to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
