Job Description:
A Quality Control (QC) Engineer in a foundry plant ensures that metal castings meet customer specifications, dimensional requirements, and material standards. They are responsible for testing raw materials, inspecting in-process components (moulding, pouring, fettling), and conducting final inspections to reduce rejects and improve production quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspection and Testing: Perform visual, dimensional, and Non-Destructive Examination (NDE/NDT) inspections on cast parts.
- Process Control: Monitor the entire foundry value chain, including sand plant operations, melting (spectrometer/chemical analysis), and heat treatment to ensure compliance with standards.
- Defect Analysis: Identify casting defects (e.g., blowholes, sand inclusions) and conduct root cause analysis using tools like 8D, Pareto, or Ishikawa.
- Documentation: Maintain QC records, including inspection reports, Heat Treatment charts, and Material Test Certificates (MTCs).
- Standard Compliance: Ensure compliance with international standards (ASTM, DIN, ISO) and company-specific requirements.
- Continuous Improvement: Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to reduce rejection rates.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Diploma (DME) or B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
- Experience: Generally 2–6 years in a metal casting/foundry environment, often with experience in specific materials like steel, iron, or aluminum.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of Sand Testing, Spectrometer operation, hardness testers, and NDT methods (DPT, MPI, UT).
- Tools: Proficient in using measuring instruments (Vernier calipers, micrometers, gauges) and reading engineering drawings.
- Soft Skills: Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
