Job Description:
An Instrument Technician in a power plant installs, calibrates, maintains, and troubleshoots field instruments, control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA), and automation devices to ensure operational efficiency. They work with sensors, transmitters, and control valves (pressure, temperature, flow), usually requiring a Diploma/ITI in Instrumentation/Electronics and 3–5 years of industrial experience. Key Responsibilities
  • Calibration & Maintenance: Calibrate and maintain pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic instruments to ensure accurate measurements.
  • Troubleshooting & Repairs: Diagnose faults in control systems, field instruments, and local panels, repairing or replacing components like transmitters and valves.
  • System Upgrades & Installation: Install new field instruments, perform loop checks, and assist with commissioning and startup/shutdown activities.
  • System Knowledge: Configure and maintain DCS (Distributed Control Systems), PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), and SCADA systems.
  • Safety & Documentation: Adhere to safety policies (HSE), maintain, and update records for calibration and maintenance. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: Diploma or ITI in Electronics, Instrumentation, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience: 3–5 years in power generation or industrial process plants.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with calibration equipment (multimeters, HART communicators) and reading P&IDs.
  • Physical Aptitude: Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze instrument failures and implement root cause corrective actions.
  • Troubleshooting: Strong troubleshooting skills in identifying problems with control loops.
