Job Description:
A Lab Chemist in a coal washery is responsible for analyzing raw coal, clean coal, and washery rejects. They perform proximate and ultimate analyses, conduct calorific value tests, and operate lab equipment to ensure product quality. Their data optimizes washing efficiency and guarantees compliance with industry standards. [1, 2, 3]
Key Responsibilities
- Sample Management: Collecting, crushing, splitting, and preparing representative coal samples from raw feeds, washed products, and waste rejects.
- Proximate Analysis: Testing for inherent moisture, ash content, volatile matter, and fixed carbon to determine the basic grade of the coal.
- Ultimate Analysis & Testing: Conducting Gross Calorific Value (GCV) tests using bomb calorimeters, and testing for impurities like total sulfur.
- Washery Optimization: Analyzing the washability and beneficiation data to help the production team adjust plant machinery and maximize yield.
- Equipment Maintenance: Operating, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory equipment such as muffle furnaces, drying ovens, and analytical balances.
- Quality Assurance: Ensuring testing procedures strictly align with standards such as ASTM, ISO, or Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
- Reporting & Documentation: Maintaining logs and generating accurate analysis reports to meet production deadlines and regulatory compliance. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: B.Sc. in Chemistry, or a Diploma in Chemical Engineering/Coal Technology.
- Experience: Typically 2 to 8 years of relevant experience in a coal testing or washery laboratory.
- Core Skills: Strong analytical chemistry skills, proficiency with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) software, and strict adherence to occupational health and safety (OHS) protocols. [1, 2, 3]
