Job Description:
The Shift Incharge/Engineer for RMP-SID manages operational shifts to ensure continuous, safe, and efficient raw material handling and sinter production. This role focuses on meeting daily production targets while maintaining strict quality controls, equipment upkeep, and safety standards. [1, 2, 3]
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
  • Manage shift operations for the raw material handling section and sinter plant.
  • Control material blending to ensure the chemical composition meets exact plant specifications.
  • Monitor process parameters including burn-through points, machine speeds, bed depth, and moisture levels.
  • Optimize production throughput to fulfill the downstream blast furnace requirements.
  • Coordinate raw material logistics across material yards, conveyors, screens, and crushers. [1]
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
  • Lead first-line troubleshooting during equipment breakdowns or process deviations.
  • Perform routine inspections of critical machinery like sinter machines, coolers, and fan systems.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation) for quick breakdown resolution.
  • Execute shutdown activities and startup sequences safely within the designated timeframes. [1]
Quality & Efficiency Control
  • Monitor sinter quality by checking physical properties like cold strength (TI/DI) and grain size distribution.
  • Minimize specific consumption of fuel, coke breeze, electrical energy, and utilities.
  • Analyze shift data to identify operational bottlenecks and implement corrective actions. [1]
Safety, Health & Environment (EHS)
  • Enforce safety protocols including Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) and Work Permit systems.
  • Conduct safety toolboxes and shift briefings for technicians and contractual workmen.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards (5S) across the plant floors and conveyor galleries.
  • Ensure pollution control equipment like ESPs (Electrostatic Precipitators) and bag filters run efficiently. [1]
Team Leadership & Reporting
  • Supervise shift personnel including operators, technicians, and contract laborers.
  • Allocate shift duties based on operational priorities and skill competencies.
  • Prepare shift reports detailing production volumes, delays, material consumption, and incidents. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Degree: B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Metallurgy, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience: 3 to 8 years of operational experience in an integrated steel plant, specifically within RMP, Sinter Plant, or Pellet Plant units. [1, 2]
Technical Skills
  • Process Knowledge: Deep understanding of sintering mechanisms, raw material characteristics, and raw mix preparation.
  • Automation Systems: Familiarity operating via Central Control Room (CCR) systems like PLC, SCADA, or DCS.
  • Tools: Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and ERP systems like SAP for material tracking. [1, 2]

  • Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate a diverse workforce under high-pressure shift conditions.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills for quick decision-making during operational emergencies.
