Job Description:
A Production Manager in a steel manufacturing plant oversees daily steelmaking and fabrication operations. They are responsible for meeting production targets, optimizing charge mixes, ensuring strict quality control, enforcing health and safety protocols, and leading shop-floor teams. [1, 2, 3]
Key Responsibilities
- Production Planning & Execution: Develop daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules. Manage operations from raw material charging (sponge iron, scrap) to melting, casting (billets/slabs), and rolling. [1]
- Operational Efficiency: Monitor KPIs to minimize tap-to-tap time, reduce energy and raw material waste, and maximize machinery uptime. [1]
- Quality Control: Enforce strict chemical and physical specifications. Conduct root-cause analysis for defects and guide metallurgy. [1, 2, 3]
- Safety Enforcement: Maintain a hazard-free work environment by ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and OSHA standards. [1, 2, 3]
- Team Leadership: Train, mentor, and evaluate supervisors, technicians, and floor workers. Assign shifts and manage workforce performance. [1]
- Maintenance Coordination: Work with maintenance teams to prioritize preventive and breakdown maintenance for equipment like induction/arc furnaces and ladles.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Production Engineering.
- Experience: Typically 10–12 years in a steel plant (e.g., EAF, Blast Furnace, or Rolling Mills).
- Technical Knowledge: Strong grasp of heat treatment, furnace operations, and metallurgy.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional problem-solving, budgeting, and conflict resolution capabilities.
- Tools: Proficiency in ERP/SAP systems and data-driven reporting. [1, 2, 3, 4]

- Reports to: Plant Manager, General Manager (GM), or Director.
- Supervises: Shift In-Charges, Production Engineers, Quality Inspectors, and Operators. [1]
