Job Description:
The Head of Control & Instrumentation (C&I) for a power plant oversees the plant's automation, monitoring, and control systems. This executive-level role ensures optimal efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance by managing plant-wide systems like DCS, PLC, and SCADA during daily operations, outages, and major capital expansions . Core Responsibilities
- System Maintenance & Reliability: Develop and execute predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance programs for field instruments, analyzers, and control systems. Maximize the uptime and reliability of critical hardware (e.g., turbine controls, safety instrumented systems) . [1, 2]
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and train instrumentation engineers and technicians. Set performance goals, enforce a strong safety culture, and foster skill development . [1, 2]
- Outage & Project Management: Plan and oversee all C&I activities during plant turnarounds, outages, and major overhauls . Support capital upgrades, from initial design through commissioning . [1]
- Compliance & Grid Integration: Ensure all systems comply with regulatory standards, OEM recommendations, and grid codes. [1, 2]
- Budgeting & Procurement: Manage the C&I operational budget, oversee spare parts inventory, and coordinate with external vendors. [1, 2, 3]
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Plant Availability: Minimizing unplanned forced outages and system trips due to C&I failures.
- Process Efficiency: Optimizing control loops to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
- Safety & Compliance: Maintaining zero-incident safety records and passing environmental and regulatory audits. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Role Qualifications
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering.
- Experience: Typically 10 to 15+ years of progressive C&I experience in the power generation or heavy manufacturing sector.
- Technical Skills: Deep, hands-on knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), SCADA, turbine governing systems, and field instrumentation
