Job Description:
A fleet manager oversees an organization's vehicle operations, balancing safety, efficiency, and cost. They manage the entire lifecycle of a commercial fleet—from vehicle procurement and preventive maintenance to driver management and compliance. Their ultimate goal is to maximize uptime, reduce risk, and minimize operational costs. 
Core Responsibilities
    • Maintenance & Uptime: Establish preventive maintenance schedules, coordinate mechanical repairs, and minimize vehicle downtime. 
    • Safety & Compliance: Ensure all drivers and vehicles comply with national transportation, environmental, and safety regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA compliance).
    • Cost & Budget Management: Develop annual operating budgets, track fuel consumption, and negotiate contracts with vendors and mechanics. 
  • Driver & Route Management: Recruit, train, and supervise drivers. Optimize daily routing and dispatch to ensure on-time deliveries. 
  • Data & Technology: Utilize fleet management software, GPS telematics, and Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to track vehicle health, fuel usage, and driver behavior. 
  • Asset Lifecycle: Manage vehicle acquisition, specification, and procurement, as well as the disposal and remarketing of older assets.
Key Skills Required
  • Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Cost Per Mile (CPM).
  • Technical Expertise: Familiarity with automotive repair, diagnostic tools, and fleet mechanics.
  • Leadership & Communication: Ability to manage a team of drivers and technicians while building positive relationships with vendors.
  • Data Analysis: Proficiency in interpreting telematics and GPS data to drive continuous operational improvements. 
Ideal Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience: Typically 5-10 years of experience in transportation, logistics, or fleet operations.
  • Certifications: Certifications like the Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) are highly desirable.
