Job Description:
An SBO (Secondary Blow/Steel Blending/Stationary Blowing) Operator in an SMS (Steel Melting Shop) and CCM (Continuous Casting Machine) operates vital secondary metallurgy and casting equipment. They control equipment that adjusts steel temperature and chemistry before directing molten metal into the CCM to be cast into billets or slabs.
Key Responsibilities
- Equipment Operation: Operate the SBO station to control gas purging, alloy additions, and steel temperature stabilization.
- Casting Execution: Oversee continuous casting strands, strand speeds, and tundish operations while coordinating with the ladle.
- Quality Control: Monitor metal chemistry, ensure casting powders are applied correctly, and inspect billets/slabs for surface defects.
- Safety Protocols: strictly adhere to high-temperature safety regulations, managing emergency cut-offs and emergency sequence protocols.
- Pre-Casting Checks: Inspect oxygen and LPG lines, cutting torches, and mould conditions before each casting sequence starts.
- Maintenance Coordination: Work with the mechanical and electrical maintenance teams to troubleshoot equipment breakdowns and conduct preventive maintenance.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Diploma in Mechanical/Metallurgical Engineering or ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certification.
- Experience: 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in SMS and CCM operations within an integrated steel plant or induction furnace/EAF facility.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of liquid steel metallurgy, temperature control, and casting parameters.
