Job Summary

The General Manager – Contracts is responsible for leading the Contracts & Commercial function throughout the project lifecycle, from pre-contract to post-contract stages. The role ensures that contracts are commercially viable, legally compliant, and effectively administered while minimizing contractual risks, maximizing profitability, and supporting successful project delivery.

The incumbent manages contract negotiations, claims,contract administration, cost control, dispute resolution, and compliance with contractual obligations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review tender documents, BOQs, specifications, and contract conditions.
  • Identify commercial and contractual risks during bid evaluation.
  • Participate in tender negotiations with clients.
  • Prepare contractual qualifications and commercial clarifications.
  • Coordinate with estimation, legal, finance, and project teams.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and finalize contracts with clients, consultants, vendors, and contractors.
  • Ensure all contractual obligations are complied with.
  • Interpret contract clauses and advise project teams.
  • Maintain contract documentation and amendments.
  • Monitor project milestones and contractual deliverables.
  • Develop contracting strategy.
  • Float enquiries and evaluate contractor quotations on ERP systems
  • Negotiate commercial terms.
  • Prepare work orders and contract agreements.
  • Monitor contractor performance.
  • Evaluate contractor claims and payment certifications.
  • Identify change orders and additional scope.
  • Prepare Extension of Time (EOT) claims.
  • Prepare cost claims and compensation events.
  • Negotiate variation orders with clients.
  • Minimize revenue leakage through effective claims management.
  • Identify contractual risks.
  • Develop mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain risk register.
  • Coordinate with legal advisors on disputes.
  • Ensure contractual compliance.
  • Monitor project commercial performance.
  • Review project budgets and cost reports.
  • Analyze profitability.
  • Check and certify contractors Bills for payment on ERP systems.
  • Improve project margins.
  • Handle contractual disputes.
  • Support arbitration and litigation processes.
  • Coordinate documentation for legal proceedings.
  • Negotiate settlements wherever possible.
  • Maintain relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors.
  • Participate in commercial meetings.
  • Resolve contractual issues proactively.
  • Support project delivery teams.
  • Ensure compliance with:
  1. Contract conditions
  2. Company policies
  3. Statutory regulations
  4. Labour laws
  5. GST provisions
  6. Arbitration Act
  7. Safety and quality requirements
  8. Lead Contracts Engineers and Commercial Managers.
  9. Develop departmental SOPs.
  10. Mentor team members.
  11. Conduct performance reviews.
  12. Build contract management capability across projects.

Educational Qualification

 18–25 years in construction, EPC, infrastructure, or real estate.

Minimum 8–10 years in senior contracts/commercial leadership roles.

Experience with high-value residential, commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects.

He/she should be a graduate Engineer preferably with P.G. qualifications in Contracts Management.

Authority Level

  • Can cerify BOQ, measurements, rate analysis, contractor claims and billing documents.
  • RA bill certification, variations, EOT and contractual deviations & recommendation for payment.
  • Cannot approve final payment, rate deviation, contract award or legal waiver without authorized approval.
