Job Description:
A Mechanical Fitter (often referred to as an MW Fitter or workshop/maintenance fitter) is a skilled tradesperson responsible for assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial machinery, mechanical systems, and structural components.
Key Responsibilities
- Assembly and Installation: Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to build, align, and install plant equipment and sub-assemblies.
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and diagnostic tests to prevent breakdowns.
- Repairs and Overhauls: Disassemble faulty machinery, replace worn-out or broken parts, and reassemble systems to exact tolerances using precision tools.
- Fabrication and Fitting: Cut, shape, drill, tap, file, and weld metal parts or piping components to make custom fits.
- Safety and Compliance: Follow strict workplace safety regulations, use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and log maintenance activities.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent, typically paired with an ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certification in Fitter trade or a formal mechanical apprenticeship.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of mechanical systems (translational and rotational), hydraulics, pneumatics, and basic power transmission.
- Tool Proficiency: Ability to use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, and dial gauges).
- Physical & Analytical Skills: Good manual dexterity, physical stamina for heavy lifting, and logical troubleshooting abilities.
