Job Description:
A PLC operator job description involves monitoring and troubleshooting automated machinery controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) to ensure smooth, safe, and efficient operations. Key responsibilities include real-time monitoring of equipment via HMIs, conducting routine inspections, performing basic troubleshooting of field instruments, and supporting maintenance teams with tasks like loop checks and I/O verification. 
 
Key responsibilities
  • Field operation and monitoring: 
    Watch over PLC-controlled equipment like motors, pumps, and conveyors, performing regular field inspections and reporting any issues. 
     
  • Troubleshooting: 
    Identify and fix basic problems with field instruments, sensors, and actuators, such as loose wiring or communication faults. 
     
  • System interaction: 
    Use HMI/SCADA screens to monitor system status, acknowledge alarms, and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to resolve issues. 
     
  • Maintenance support: 
    Assist with both preventive and corrective maintenance activities, including verification and testing, as directed by the control or maintenance team. 
     
  • Data and reporting: 
    Maintain logs of equipment operations, breakdowns, and maintenance activities to help optimize production and minimize downtime. 
     
Required skills and qualifications
  • Education: 
    A diploma, ITI, or BE/BS in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, or a related field is often required. 
     
  • Technical skills:
    • Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude. 
       
    • Familiarity with reading and interpreting ladder diagrams and control circuits. 
       
    • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems. 
       
  • Soft skills:
    • Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities. 
       
    • Strong communication and teamwork skills. 
       
    • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks. 
       
    • Adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.
