Job Description:
A Mechanical Engineer in a power plant is responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, and optimization of critical machinery, including turbines, boilers, pumps, and heat exchangers. They ensure plant safety, efficiency, and reliability by conducting root cause analysis, supervising maintenance teams, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. 
Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Maintenance & Operation: Directs and plans mechanical maintenance for plant equipment to ensure optimal operating parameters. Monitors performance to troubleshoot issues and reduce downtime.
  • Engineering & Design: Designs and implements modifications to equipment for better safety and reliability. Develops and reviews technical documentation, including PID diagrams and blueprints.
  • Project Management: Oversees installation, testing, and commissioning of new equipment and structural supports.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensures all mechanical systems comply with safety, quality, and environmental regulations.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Investigates equipment malfunctions and develops solutions to prevent future failures. 
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree (B.E./B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 5-10 years of experience in site erection, commissioning, and maintenance of power plants (e.g., thermal, hydro, or combined-cycle).
  • Technical Expertise: Knowledge of turbines, boilers, pumps, piping networks, and lubrication systems.
  • Software Proficiency: Familiarity with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software for designing or modifying systems.
  • Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, analytical, and leadership skills for managing technicians. 
Common Working Environment
Mechanical engineers in power plants often work more than 40 hours per week. The role is hands-on, involving regular plant field rounds, maintenance outages, and collaboration with electrical and civil teams.
