Job Description:
A fitter is a skilled tradesperson who assembles, installs, and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment by fitting and fabricating parts according to blueprints and specifications. Key responsibilities include interpreting technical drawings, using various hand and power tools, welding, performing maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. 
 
Core responsibilities
    • Assembly and installation: Fitting and assembling machinery, engines, and other mechanical equipment using hand and power tools.
    • Interpreting technical documents: Reading and understanding blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine how parts should be assembled.
    • Fabrication: Cutting, shaping, and fabricating metal parts as needed.

 

  • Maintenance and repair: Performing regular maintenance, inspecting equipment for malfunctions, and repairing or replacing parts.
  • Welding: Using welding equipment to join components and prepare them for assembly.
  • Quality control: Inspecting the completed work to ensure it meets quality and accuracy standards. 

 

 
Key skills and qualifications
  • Technical skills: Ability to use hand and power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Blueprint reading: Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Problem-solving: Skill in diagnosing and rectifying machinery problems.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous approach to ensure parts are fitted correctly and to spec.
  • Safety consciousness: Thorough understanding of and adherence to health and safety regulations.
  • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate with other team members, such as engineers and production staff.
