Job Description:
A Head for AOD Converter is a senior management role in a steel plant, responsible for the entire operation, production planning, and maintenance of the Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) refining process. This position ensures efficient, safe, and high-quality production of specialty steels like stainless steel.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Management: Oversee all AOD operations, ensuring daily production targets are met efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Process Optimization: Monitor and adjust operational parameters (temperature, gas flow, lance height) to maximize efficiency and productivity while minimizing costs, such as argon consumption and flux usage.
- Quality Control: Ensure the metallurgical quality of steel produced meets specific client requirements and industry standards, including achieving low carbon and impurity levels.
- Maintenance & Reliability: Coordinate with maintenance teams for preventive and breakdown maintenance of AOD converters, lance systems, gas supply, and associated equipment. This includes managing refractory lining and repairs.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce stringent safety protocols related to high-temperature steelmaking and gas handling, and ensure adherence to environmental and statutory guidelines.
- Team Leadership: Guide, support, and train AOD operators, shift engineers, and technicians to ensure discipline, productivity, and operational continuity.
- Inventory & Spares Management: Plan and manage critical spare parts inventory, especially for long-lead time items.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain comprehensive records of heat data, process parameters, maintenance activities, and production reports to drive continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Kaizen, 5S).
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field.
- Experience: Significant work experience (typically 7-15+ years) in steel melting shops (SMS) operations, specifically with AOD, Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), or Induction Furnaces.
- Technical Skills: In-depth knowledge of AOD technology, automation and control systems (PLC/SCADA/DCS), and refractory management.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, analytical (cost/yield analysis), and team-building skills.
