Job Description:
  • A GET/DET Metallurgy job description involves the study and application of metals, focusing on developing and improving metallic materials and processes. Key duties include performing destructive and non-destructive testing, conducting failure analysis, providing technical advice on metal suitability, and ensuring quality control in production. This entry-level role often involves hands-on lab work, assisting senior engineers, and supporting production teams to solve problems. 
     
    Key responsibilities
    • Testing and analysis: Conducting lab-based analysis using destructive and non-destructive techniques to test metal composition, properties, and performance.
    • Quality control: Ensuring products meet manufacturing and quality standards, and investigating production problems.
    • Problem-solving: Performing failure analysis to investigate corrosion and metal fatigue, and working with teams to develop solutions.
    • Technical support: Providing technical advice and support on the suitability of metals for different purposes and assisting in the design of components.
    • Process development: Assisting in developing new metallurgical processes and improving existing ones, often through laboratory experiments and trials.
    • Collaboration: Liaising with other engineering and technical staff, clients, and production teams to ensure projects and products meet requirements.
    • Documentation: Preparing technical reports and documentation of findings, tests, and recommendations. 
     
    Typical qualifications and skills
    • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
    • Strong understanding of material properties and behavior.
    • Experience in metal production processes.
    • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work with specialist computer applications and laboratory equipment.
    • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
