A General Manager (GM) or Deputy General Manager (DGM) for a Power Plant within a steel manufacturing unit is a senior leadership role focused on ensuring uninterrupted, cost-effective power supply to steel-making operations (e.g., Blast Furnaces, SMS, Rolling Mills). This role involves managing utility operations, maintenance, and compliance for captive power plants, often using Waste Heat Recovery Boilers (WHRB) or Coal Fired Boiler Circuits (CFBC).
Job Purpose
To oversee the operational efficiency, maintenance, and safety of the captive power plant to support maximum production capacity of the steel plant while optimizing energy costs.

Key Responsibilities
- Operations Management: Oversee 24/7 operations of the power plant, including CFBC boilers, turbines, and generators, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to the steel manufacturing units.
- Maintenance & Reliability: Lead preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance for critical machinery (turbines, boilers, rotary equipment, pumps).
- Fuel & Energy Optimization: Manage fuel supply chains (coal, waste gas) and optimize energy consumption to reduce the cost of generation.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to environmental norms (CPCB, emission standards) and safety protocols (HSE).
- Budgeting & Cost Control: Prepare and manage the operating budget, including mechanical spares, consumables, and labor costs.
- Team Leadership: Lead technical teams, manage staff scheduling, and train personnel (including Graduate Engineer Trainees) for O&M roles.
- Project Management: Oversee installation, commissioning, and shutdowns of power plant equipment.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical/Mechanical).
- Experience: 10–20+ years in power plant operation and maintenance, specifically within the steel or heavy manufacturing industry.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of CFBC boilers, turbines, WHRB, and high-tension electrical systems.
- Systems Proficiency: Experience with SAP (PM/MM modules) and technical reporting.
- Competencies: Strong leadership, analytical troubleshooting, and vendor management skills.
