Job Description:
A Turbine-Generator (TG) Field Operator in a power plant is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of turbine and generator equipment and its auxiliary systems from the field. This role involves field inspections, monitoring parameters, assisting with startup and shutdown procedures, performing routine maintenance, and coordinating with the control room.
Responsibilities
Operational duties
- Conduct regular field rounds: Perform inspections of the turbine-generator area to monitor equipment conditions.
- Monitor equipment parameters: Observe and record critical data, such as temperature, pressure, vibration, and flow rates from local gauges and instruments.
- Execute startup and shutdown procedures: Assist with the safe and controlled startup, loading, unloading, and shutdown of the turbine and generator systems.
- Operate auxiliary systems: Control and maintain supporting equipment, including the lube oil system, seal oil system, cooling systems, and pumps.
- Adjust controls: Make manual adjustments to controls to regulate speed, pressure, and temperature for optimal performance.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
- Perform routine maintenance: Conduct minor maintenance tasks such as tightening joints and lubricating equipment to prevent failure.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose issues: Identify and resolve operational issues by diagnosing equipment problems and implementing corrective actions.
- Respond to alarms: Promptly respond to alarms and abnormal conditions by taking appropriate corrective actions.
- Report major repairs: Immediately report any malfunctions, leaks, or unusual noises that require major repairs.
Coordination and reporting
- Communicate with the control room: Coordinate effectively with the Control Room Engineer, reporting equipment status and executing field actions based on their instructions.
- Maintain logs and reports: Keep accurate records and logs of equipment performance, maintenance activities, and operational data.
- Collaborate with teams: Work closely with maintenance and other operational teams to coordinate activities.
Safety and compliance
- Adhere to safety procedures: Strictly follow all safety protocols, including the Permit to Work (PTW) system and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Ensure compliance: Maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with all safety and operational regulations.
- Conduct safety inspections: Perform safety inspections on equipment and tools.
Qualifications and skills
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. An Industrial Training Institute (ITI) certification in a relevant trade like Fitter or a technical diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is often preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience as a Field Operator in a power plant or industrial setting is often required, with specific needs varying by employer.
- Technical knowledge: A strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, including familiarity with power generation equipment, is essential.
- Problem-solving: Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills to diagnose and resolve equipment problems.
- Attention to detail: The ability to carefully monitor instruments, read gauges, and notice small deviations is critical for safe operation.
- Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills for reporting, logging, and coordinating with other plant personnel.
- Safety consciousness: A strong commitment to and knowledge of industrial safety procedures and protocols.
- Physical fitness: The ability to perform physical tasks, such as climbing ladders, standing for long periods, and working in tight spaces.
