Job Description:
A cook is responsible for preparing food in a kitchen, which includes tasks like preparing ingredients, following recipes, and ensuring food quality and safety. Key duties involve cooking various dishes, maintaining a clean and organized workstation, managing inventory, and adhering to sanitation and health guidelines. Cooks work in diverse environments, from restaurants to cafeterias, and need strong time management and communication skills. 
 
Core responsibilities
    • Food preparation: Prepping ingredients, such as washing and chopping vegetables, measuring, and mixing ingredients according to recipes.
    • Cooking: Cooking food using various methods like grilling, baking, frying, steaming, and boiling, following company recipes and standards.
    • Quality control: Ensuring food is fresh, cooked to the correct temperature, and presented attractively.

 

  • Sanitation and safety: Maintaining a clean and sanitized work area, equipment, and utensils, and following all food safety and handling guidelines.
  • Inventory management: Monitoring food stock, placing orders for new ingredients, and properly storing excess food. 

 

 
Key skills and qualifications
  • Experience: Proven experience as a cook is often required.
  • Technical skills: Proficiency in various cooking techniques and knowledge of kitchen equipment like grills and ovens.
  • Soft skills: Strong communication, time management, and the ability to perform under pressure.
  • Organization: Ability to stay organized in a fast-paced environment, work efficiently, and manage multiple tasks. 
 
Example daily tasks
  • Setting up a workstation with all necessary ingredients and equipment before a shift.
  • Preparing ingredients according to the day's menu.
  • Cooking and assembling dishes as orders come in.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing the workstation, equipment, and utensils during and after the shift.
  • Assisting other cooks to ensure timely completion of orders.
  • Storing leftover food properly and rotating stock to ensure freshness.
