Job Description:
An instrument technician installs, maintains, calibrates, and repairs instruments and control systems to ensure they operate accurately and efficientlyThey diagnose and troubleshoot problems using test equipment, interpret technical drawings, and work with electrical and mechanical systems in various industries like manufacturing, energy, and healthcare. Key duties include performing preventive maintenance, repairing or replacing defective parts, and collaborating with engineers on system improvements.  
 
Key responsibilities
  • Installation and setup: 
    Mount, wire, and test instrumentation and control equipment, including sensors, controllers, and other measurement devices. 
     
  • Maintenance and repair: 
    Perform routine maintenance, diagnose issues, and repair or replace defective components to keep systems running. 
     
  • Calibration: 
    Test and calibrate instruments and systems to ensure they are functioning within specified tolerances, using tools like HART and Fluke meters. 
     
  • Troubleshooting: 
    Use technical knowledge and test equipment to identify and fix problems in electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems, including PLCs and DCS systems. 
     
  • Documentation: 
    Maintain accurate records of all work performed, including calibration details, repair logs, and test results. 
     
  • Collaboration: 
    Work with engineers and other technicians to improve equipment performance, modify control loops, and assist with commissioning and startup activities. 
     
  • Safety and compliance: 
    Follow all safety protocols and procedures, and ensure equipment is in compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements. 
     
Required skills and qualifications
  • Technical skills: 
    Strong knowledge of electronics, instrumentation, and control systems, including PLCs. 
     
  • Problem-solving: 
    Ability to diagnose and solve complex technical issues efficiently. 
     
  • Attention to detail: 
    Meticulous attention to detail is crucial for assembly, repair, and calibration tasks. 
     
  • Reading and interpreting technical documents: 
    Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings. 
     
  • Math skills: 
    Ability to use mathematics for scaling, analysis, and troubleshooting. 
     
  • Communication: 
    Strong verbal and written communication skills to report issues and collaborate with team members. 
     
  • Physical ability: 
    Ability to work in a variety of physical positions, lift equipment, and use hand and power tools. 
     
  • Experience: 
    Experience with instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting is often required, sometimes with a degree or certification in a related field.
