Job Description:
A Fitter in a foundary planty is a skilled tradesperson who primarily assembles, installs, maintains, and repairs the mechanical equipment and machinery used in the production process. They ensure all equipment runs safely and efficiently according to technical specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Assembly and Installation: Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics to assemble and install mechanical systems, equipment, and structural components. This involves using a variety of hand and power tools.
- Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine and preventative maintenance checks on machinery, diagnose mechanical issues, and repair or replace faulty components to minimize downtime.
- Fabrication and Fitting: Cut, shape, and modify metal parts and materials (such as angle iron, I-beams, and plate steel) to precise dimensions using tools like shears, cutting torches, grinders, and drills.
- Welding and Joining: Utilize various welding techniques (MIG, TIG, ARC) and other methods like bolting or riveting to fuse or join structural components and ensure secure connections.
- Quality Assurance: Inspect fabricated and assembled components to ensure they meet the required dimensions, quality standards, and specifications.
- Safety and Compliance: Strictly adhere to all health and safety regulations and company policies, ensuring a safe work environment and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Collaboration: Work closely with production teams, engineers, welders, and supervisors to ensure efficient workflow and project completion.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Proficiency: Expertise in using a wide array of hand and power tools, machinery, and welding equipment.
- Blueprint Interpretation: The ability to read, understand, and apply technical drawings and engineering plans is crucial.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve mechanical issues effectively.
- Attention to Detail: Precision in measurements and fitting components is vital for quality work and safety.
- Physical Stamina: The role requires physical fitness, including the ability to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and work in various conditions.
- Education: A high school diploma or GED is typical, often supplemented by a formal apprenticeship program or a technical qualification like an ITI Fitter certification.
