Job Description:
The job description for a Melter in FOUNDARY PLANT involves operating furnaces to melt steel and alloys, ensuring the correct chemical composition and temperature for the atomization process, and adhering to strict safety and quality control procedures. The resulting molten metal is then atomized into small spherical particles.
Key Responsibilities
- Furnace Operation: Operate and monitor induction or electric arc furnaces and ancillary equipment used in the melting process.
- Material Management: Accurately weigh and charge raw materials, scrap steel, and alloy additions into the furnace.
- Quality Control & Metallurgy: Monitor the melting process to maintain the desired temperature and chemical composition of the molten metal, making necessary alloy adjustments as per grade design and quality requirements.
- Process Monitoring: Interpret system alarms, monitor gauges, and adjust controls to ensure an efficient and high-quality melt.
- Refractory Maintenance: Perform proper and routine maintenance on furnace linings and related equipment.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate melting and pouring records, production data, and quality control information.
- Safety and Compliance: Strictly follow all safety procedures, guidelines, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent accidents in a hot and potentially hazardous environment.
- Collaboration: Coordinate with crane operators and other production team members to ensure smooth material handling and production flow.
Typical Requirements
- Experience: Prior experience (often 2+ years) in a melting environment, preferably with induction or electric arc furnaces.
- Knowledge: Understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment, furnace operations, and safety protocols.
- Skills: Strong attention to detail, ability to troubleshoot problems, basic math skills, and the capacity to work in a team environment.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and work in an environment with high temperatures and noise levels.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is typically required; technical certifications or diplomas in mechanical engineering or metallurgy can be beneficial.
