Job Description:
An Electrician for a Scrap Processing facility is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing the electrical systems and components of machinery used to process, shred, and sort scrap metal or electronics. This role ensures continuous, safe operation of heavy-duty equipment like conveyors, grinders, shears, and cranes, typically involving high-voltage systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repair: Conduct preventive maintenance and urgent repairs on motors, generators, controllers, switchboards, and wiring.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose malfunctions in electrical systems (3-phase circuits, PLC control systems) using testing devices like multimeters and voltmeters.
- Equipment Upkeep: Maintain and repair specialized recycling equipment, including overhead cranes, furnaces, and shredders.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure all work complies with safety standards, including lockout/tag-out (LOTO) procedures, NEC (National Electrical Code), and NFPA 70E.
- Installation: Install and wire new electrical equipment, including conduits, panels, and sensors.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, and parts usage.
Requirements
- Experience: Proven experience as an industrial electrician, preferably in a manufacturing, recycling, or heavy industrial environment.
- Licensure: Valid journeyman electrician license or certification.
- Technical Skills: Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and manuals.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of 480/240/120 VAC systems, DC motors, and PLC-based controls.
- Physical Ability: Ability to lift heavy materials (50+ lbs), work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varied weather conditions.
- Education: High school diploma or GED; vocational or technical training in electrical work.
Typical Working Conditions
This position often involves working in loud, dusty environments with exposure to moving mechanical parts and high temperatures. The role may require being on-call or working overtime to minimize production downtime.
