Job Description:
Proof Reader: A proofreader performs a 'quality check' on publications, usually just before they are due to go to print. At medico-marketing company, it involves patient education leaflets, booklets, magazine, and print learning modules.
Responsibilities:
Correcting spelling mistakes and grammatical errors;
Sub-editing text written by a number of authors to ensure consistent house style;
Resolving queries directly with the author/project managers, e.g. style and text inconsistencies;
Producing or working to a style checklist to ensure consistency in hyphenation, capitalisation, formatting of references, etc.
Maintaining awareness of new words or phrases coming into popular usage with a view to ensuring they're appropriate for the readership and indexing
Discussing and resolving any potentially libellous sections with the editor;
Desired Candidate Profile
Requirements:
Proofreaders typically need a bachelor's degree in English or a science background = or a related field, as well as impeccable spelling, grammar and knowledge of style.
Desirables:
A scrupulous approach to detailed work
A high level of skill in written English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation
The motivation to work on their own, and to meet deadlines, concentration, accuracy and great attention to detail, the ability to multitask.
An ability to stay focused throughout an entire document, which may be long and technical.
Good judgement, to gauge which changes are necessary.
Familiarity with the production process for books and documents.
An ability to work within the style of the author and publisher, rather than impose their own ideas
Good interpersonal skills, to build working relationships and contacts with potential clients
