Job Description:
A belt press operator at a coal washery is responsible for the dewatering process, which separates solid coal fines from water. This role is vital for preparing coal for sale, managing waste materials, and ensuring environmental compliance.
Job summary
Under general supervision, the belt press operator operates, monitors, and maintains the belt filter press and associated equipment within a coal preparation plant. The operator ensures the efficient removal of moisture from coal slurry (tailings), producing a drier, solid "cake" while recycling process water.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Operations control: Operate and monitor the belt press filter control panel, adjusting settings for proper pressure, belt speed, and chemical dosing to maximize dewatering efficiency.
- Chemical and polymer management: Manage and adjust the feed of flocculants and other chemical additives to the slurry, ensuring optimal particle coagulation for effective solid-liquid separation.
- Equipment inspection: Conduct regular inspections of the belt press, including belts, rollers, bearings, and hydraulics, to identify and report any issues or potential malfunctions.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve operational problems such as belt misalignment, incorrect flocculation, or equipment jams to prevent downtime and maintain production.
- Cleaning and maintenance: Perform routine cleaning of the belts with high-pressure water jets and wash down the work area to prevent buildup and ensure a safe and hygienic working environment.
- Quality assurance: Take and test samples of the incoming slurry and the outgoing dewatered cake to monitor moisture content and ensure quality standards are met.
- Record keeping: Maintain accurate daily log sheets and enter data into the plant's management software regarding machine performance, production rates, and any maintenance actions.
- Safety and compliance: Adhere strictly to all plant health, safety, and environmental regulations and procedures. This includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling of chemicals.
- Support tasks: Assist other plant operators or maintenance personnel with various tasks as needed to support overall plant operations.
Qualifications and requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience operating a belt press or similar filtration/dewatering equipment, preferably within a mining, coal preparation, or wastewater treatment environment.
- Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret meters, gauges, and control panels.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols in an industrial setting.
- Physical fitness to stand for extended periods, climb, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends, as needed.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
