Job Description:
A Head of Legal (or General Counsel) is a senior legal professional responsible for overseeing and managing the legal affairs of an organization. They lead a team of lawyers and legal staff, providing legal advice and guidance to the business. This role also involves strategic planning, legal risk management, and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Advice and Guidance: Providing legal counsel to executives, managers, and employees on various legal matters.
- Team Leadership: Supervising and managing the legal team, including hiring, training, and performance management.
- Legal Strategy: Developing and implementing legal strategies aligned with the organization's goals.
- Legal Compliance: Ensuring the organization complies with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating legal risks for the organization.
- Contract Management: Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and agreements.
- Litigation Management: Managing and overseeing litigation matters.
- External Counsel Management: Managing relationships with external legal counsel.
- Budgeting and Resource Management: Developing and managing the legal department budget.
- Legal Operations: Overseeing the legal department's daily operations.
Additional Responsibilities May Include:
- Corporate Governance: Advising on corporate governance matters.
- Intellectual Property: Managing intellectual property matters.
- Compliance Audits: Conducting internal legal compliance audits.
- Stakeholder Management: Liaising with external parties such as regulators and government agencies.
- Legal Training: Developing and delivering legal training programs for the organization.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Law Degree (LLB) and/or Master of Laws (LLM) .
- Extensive Legal Experience: Typically 10+ years of experience in commercial law, with senior management experience.
- Strong Leadership and Management Skills: Ability to lead and motivate a team.
- Excellent Communication and Negotiation Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with both legal and non-legal audiences.
- Business Acumen: Understanding of business operations and strategic planning.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide sound advice.
